How LED Therapy Calms & Clears Skin
Acne isn't just about breakouts; it's about inflammation, imbalance, and overstimulated skin. But what if light could help rebalance it all?
What Science Says About Red Light and Acne
A clinical study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (PMID: 29095531) found that low-level red LED light can actively reduce inflammation and calm one of the root causes of acne: hyperkeratinization. This is a process where pores become blocked and overactive.
Blue Light vs. Red Light: What’s the Difference?
A clinical study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (PMID: 29095531) found that low-level red LED light can actively reduce inflammation and calm one of the root causes of acne: hyperkeratinization. This is a process where pores become blocked and overactive.
Most people associate blue light with acne, and for good reason.
💙 Blue Light
- Wavelength: 405–420 nm
- Targets C. acnes bacteria on the skin’s surface
- Ideal for active breakouts
❤️ Red Light
- Works deeper in the skin
- Doesn’t kill bacteria, but:
- Reduces inflammation
- Soothes irritation
- Supports balanced skin function
- Great for reactive skin and prevention
In short
- Blue light = kills acne-causing bacteria
- Red light = calms, heals, and rebalances the skin
What the Study Found
Using a lab model that mimicked acne-prone skin, researchers exposed skin tissue to oleic acid (an acne trigger), then treated it with low-dose red LED light (0.2–1.2 J/cm²).
Here’s what they saw:
Inflammation dropped significantly
→ A key irritation trigger (IL-1α) was visibly reduced
Hyperkeratinization was reduced
→ Less buildup of the outer skin layer (stratum corneum)
Skin barrier function improved
→ Red light boosted the skin’s resilience
All of this happened at low doses, making it gentle, safe, and suitable for daily skincare.
